Yep its an Evap canister. Essentially a breather tube that vents to a canister and supposedly sends the fuel back to the engine versus into the atmosphere. Most people remove them and plug the line coming from the throttle body.

There is a write up here (different bike same idea) on removal;

Ducati Evaporative Emissions Canister and System - webBikeWorld

Rather than follow the line up to the throttle body you can alternately use one of the bolts used to secure it to the bike as a plug for that line.

It will literally take you five minutes to remove it. Once you get the actual canister itself off, you can also take the bracket off. After that, I just routed the tubes along with all the other hoses that dangle under the bike and you can't even tell they are there.

I believe someone posted a how-to on the forum here with step-by-step instructions if you need them. Just search for "evap canister".

Just remember that the tube that runs to the intake needs to be plugged and the one that comes out of the gas tank needs to hang into open air. All it is is a box full of charcoal. If you over-fill your gas tank or tip it over the gasoline leaks into the canister and just sits there. Otherwise what it does is just takes the gas fumes and sucks them through the charcoal and pulls the fumes into the intake manifold and burns it off with the regular gasoline. I didn't feel too guilty removing mine since it has hardly any impact on the environment. I don't know what the current laws are in the USA but it used to be that they were only required in California. My 2000 Kawasaki doesn't have the canister because it's the '49 state legal bike' versus the 'California' model.
