I have the draft version of the factory service manual which talks a bit about the VIN number. The VIN for my bike doesn't fit the pattern mentioned, however.

My insurance company made me send them a photo of my VIN to prove it was correct because it was not showing up anywhere in their systems as a valid vehicle.

Have any of you (in the USA) had this issue?

Does your VIN have the K where the service manual states it should? Mine does not.

ie: ML0K....

My insurance didn't recognize the VIN either (Canada). They had to call my dealer to confirm the bike was legit. Said it's not unusual for new models....takes some time for the VINs to get into the system.

That answers it. USA VIN system for the bikes is different than Europe. I didn't have any trouble getting insurance, just having them believe me when they kept reading my number back to me over the phone and asking me if it was right. I sent them a photo of the number on the bike and they filed it away with my policy.
