I've done my first mod, and it's not just style over practicality (or even safety in this case). I really do prefer this mirror position.

Standard mirror position, most of the view was of my shoulders. Probably could have adjusted it a little better, but I just don't like mirrors up there anyway. I find them distracting for the view in front of me.

With under bar mirrors, i can take a glance down and the view is under my arms completely unrestricted from body parts.

To add to this, I think bikes just look loads better with the mickey mouse ear mirrors removed. You don't seem many, if any customs with big mirrors - do you?

Here are some photos. I'll take a few more when I'm out on the road so you can see what view I get.

How's view behind at stop lights/signs? Besides blind spots, I use my left to keep track of what is happening in the passing lane and back. The right is for more behind me at the lights.
It's ok at lights, I can see most things. I might have to move my head around a little.

I just bought some others that look the same except are black (not carbon fibre look) - however the bonus is that the mirror is a lot better as it's slightly convex and gives a much better field of view. So not all of these mirrors are equal! Current ones I just got on eBay (BLACK MOTORCYCLE BIKE BAR END MOUNT ROUND ALLOY MIRRORS -PAIR 22mm 7/8" BARS | eBay). I like some nicer looking ones, but these are the best I could find that fit how I want them to.

I've got them both set up to go directly back and out a little so I can see what's going on and what's approaching, but I don't use them for manoeuvres. I will always give a shoulder check.

Great. I was going to do this with the bar ends on the M796, but there was no room between the tank and handlebars during steering. I like the setup.

Yes, always a shoulder check. Even when just passing someone and re-merging on the right. Some people took it as a challenge and wanted to race.

If one day you crash the mirrors will definitely **** up your tank. Bad choice imho.
LOL. I think if I crash, what the mirrors do to my tank will be the least of my worries.

I've crashed a bike before with the same mirrors (moped pulled out in front of me). Broken pegs, bent forks, buckled front wheel, bodywork all broken, snapped brake lever... tank was fine by the way. Oh ... and broken wrist, knee damage... no riding for 3 months!

For the record, the mirrors don't go anywhere near the tank on full lock - they're way above it due to the raised handle bars. And even if they did, they are gripped in place by the clamps, but with a little pressure, they move for adjustment - like normal mirrors. So on impact the mirrors would give before the tank.
