The Perfect Suspension Package

17341 Views 21 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Jerry Winder
Suspension to me is more than a shock and fork. It's mechanical art!
Designed from the ground up this is what I believe is the perfect suspension package. Race quality components that will transform the ride of the Scrambler.
A custom designed shock from SB built to specs by JRi and a fork cartridge designed in conjunction between SB & GP Suspension. For one purpose with no corners cut.
A fully adjustable shock that can be completely customized. Remote reservoir with on the fly adjustability. A 25mm fork cartridge that has true left compression, right rebound adjustment. So precise with feedback that you can hold the line.
This combo is trackday ready or comfortable on the commute.

Since you don't have a website through which you can sell your product, or even see their pictures or prices, how do you conduct business?

Do you describe the product over the phone and then give us a PO box # to send you the cash?

Here is SB Suspensions website...

Home - SB Suspension

How they "conduct business" is very well. Suspension upgrades of this sort require more contact and exchange of information than a faceless website experience.

Ken is a VERY detailed and knowledgable person in the industry. He goes out of his way to make sure that his customers get exactly what they need. The only way tis is possible is through personal contact.
Tony, Thank you for giving me a good word. Ralph, Thank you for bringing any lack of information to my attention. I really appreciate your input. As Tony pointed out I do have a website but I do not have a commercial store in my website. Also, I have a facebook page "Scrambler Suspension" Hopefully, I have enough information on the page.

First and foremost. I had a online store. Having one fraudulent purchase raises prices across the board for customers. I do not wish to pass that type of loss onto a customer. Second, As Tony pointed out. Selling suspension to me is a very personal matter. I work on suspension from Top professional racers all the way to full dresser Cruisers. Asking what a person weighs will not get them proper suspension. Knowing a riders experience and skill level as well as the type of riding and loads on the bike will help me guarantee a better chance of getting it right out of the box. I'm a 7 day a week suspension guy. I do not sit around a warehouse waiting for a order to come in. I contract with racers and major companies to tune or produce components on many levels of motorcycling.

I sell on product knowledge and tuning.

The SB/JRi shock is available in three levels.

All shock models have a remote frame mounted reservoir. This offers quick compression adjustment(within reach-no tools required) and the ability to upgrade compression adjustment at service intervals. All shocks have quick rebound adjustment(within reach-no tools required).

Streetfighter- Single Adjustable rebound with ride height adjustment. $799 (Entry Level)

Double adjustable- Compression adjustment, Rebound adjustment and ride height adjustment. $985 (Recommended)

Triple adjustable- This shock is equipped with high speed compression-$1295 (racing applications)

Fork Cartridges:

I offer the GP 25mm Cartridge for the Scrambler. The cartridge is $1150. The forks require that they be sent in for installation. It is a very complicated install and both forks need to machined. The cost is $250. This is not a dealer level install.

I also offer the Andreani 20mm fork cartridge. This cartridge also requires sending in your forks. The price is $890.

Lastly, I do sell Ohlins and have been a service center in the USA for 13 years.
I offer the Ohlins Scrambler shock for $648.

I just sent Ken payment for my rear shock. The PO Box he gave me sounds legit....haha. (I'm kidding!)

In all seriousness, Ken was quite helpful in explaining his product to me during our conversation. There is no "salesman's pitch" but rather plain answers to very basic questions that seemed like rocket science to me.

What I gathered from my conversation with him is this: I would rather buy product from someone who not only developed the unit but actually uses it on the street and has carnal knowledge of its performance. The way he systematically explained the technicalities of the product means he knows his craft.

My other option is to buy from someone who will tell me that the better unit to buy will be the more expensive one because it has "adjustments" but not explain it. Better yet, get excited over a product and have the actual manufacturer tell me that they will not do business where I reside...#@#^!!!.

As far as the unit itself, its American made, I live here in the United States and can get support if needed- It makes a night and day difference for me as I am also an avid fan of small businesses.

Having said that, my wife saw the payment I made and would like to know why the rear shock I have is already "broken". I gave her your number. :p

I just saw the JRI on a scrambler today. While I like the adjustability, I'm not a fan of the remote reservoir. How does the gold ohlins look next to the yellow icon? I haven't seen them together.

You don't recommend that I let the ducati dealership install the andreani cartridges? I would hate to send my forks off and be unable to ride for a couple of weeks or more.

PS Ken, I thought it only fair after my earlier post to say that I talked to a fellow yellow icon owner in person today who recommends you.
@Ken Hall, is there going to be Ohlins front fork or somebody else's fork in the future? Would be nice to upgrade the hole fork, like golden Ohlins..

She can always call the shop. I have a pretty good track record explaining to the better half about safety and control. We wouldn't want anything to happen to you while your out scooting around on a silly motorcycle.:)

The fork is very hard and tricky to get apart. If it goes wrong the thread will seize and the bottom fork leg is garbage. Ducati wants $600 for a $50 part. I have no work around on the OEM part. If I did I would offer a core charge/return on the disassembled fork leg for a dealer install.

I try to turn the forks around in 2 days. That way will shipping you only lose 8-10 days of riding depending on far away you live.

I do not feel that Ohlins will offer a $2300 fork for a $8500 motorcycle.
However, Ohlins does offer a large selection of forks and using custom triple clamps and wheel/ brake combinations. Then it would be feasible to have a set of Ohlins forks on a scrambler. I've done it before in the past on other bikes and it does get pricey when everything is added up.

Ya know, I'm no pro racer and certainly no cruiser rider but have ridden hundreds of thousands of miles, been deeply involved in online MC communities for many years and I've never heard of any of the suspension you speak of.
Who the **** is SB, GP and JRi?...
Naperville is hardly the mecca of motorsports either.
I'm wondering, are you a forum sponsor? because I see member next to your title and while I'm sure you're a nice guy, as far as I can tell you are spamming this forum without supporting it, peddling off brand suspension and quite high prices on actual name brand stuff. Every single one of your posts have been to market your (non-internet) business and sell something.
Spamming salesman have no place in forums tech sections which are for owners to share their first hand experiences, not to peddle your stuff to make a buck, no matter the 7 day a week suspension salesman passion...

Just sayin', tourist.

Nothing like the pot calling a kettle black. You have a link on your profile promoting your website which shows you riding BMW products! With a link on the splash page to a BMW forum that you own.

I'm not on this forum to spam anything or anyone. I have a passion for making a motorcycle handle to the best of it's ability.

I'm not new to Ducati. I've been riding Ducati's since 1991! I've not had a day since then which I didn't have at least 2 or 3 Ducati's in my garage. How many people on this board have that kind of loyalty to the brand. I love my new Scrambler and it does show. It must show with my excitement in my posts. I can't help but love my new daily rider.

To answer your question; You have a search bar on your browser. You may need to use it. Your website only shows BMW touring not racing. Search Jeff Ryan, Dave Hodges, Barry Wressell with KFG which merged with GP a few years back. Better yet ask a racer. Of course SB which is me Ken Hall. I've been a Factory trained Ducati mechanic before so I know the bikes and motors. I have been doing suspension for 15 years and I contract my tuning services in MotoAmerica. I stand behind all my work. Love me or hate me I get the job done right.

So stop all your hating. I'm not a snake oil salesman. I create business mostly on customer testimonies not on a single forum. I'm posting on here because I like Scramblers and I'm a enthusiast. I do sponsor the other Scrambler Forum and I've been a member on this forum since December 2014. I see your join in date was a month ago! Once again your site doesn't link to this forum but to the BMW touring forum. If this forum wants a sponsor I would be happy to help out. They haven't asked as of yet.

I wonder if you are thinking that I don't have a lot of posts. Most posts are about things that don't concern me. If I don't have anything important to say then I don't say it. Besides I'm busy working on motorcycle suspension. I really don't need to ask a lot of questions on the bike. I usually know the answers and people come to me.
If I can make riding a Scrambler a better experience for one person then I'm happy on the inside. Not because I post on a forum and you don't understand how my information can change a motorcycle.

Oh Ken, you really should't helped me make my point so well, spoken like a true salesman. You must not understand that you as a businessman in a thread you started just to sell something will just keep digging your hole with every word. You did a marvelous job.

Now, as for your personal attacks on me.
First off, I don't profit off of my website, I just take the time to share my passions for motorcycles and photography, not selling anything. And the forum is also a 100% non-for-profit forum. No member fees, no advertisements, no selling of emails, no sponsors, nothing. I pay for all of it out of pocket because I enjoy it and I value good online communities. I don't allow any vendors, nobody can buy me.
OK, I'll admit last year I was selling Lost decals for a while for people to have, but I donated all the meager proceeds off of selling decals to motorcycle travelers who maintain websites to share their adventures.
Second, we have four different brand bikes in the garage so don't think my scope of interest is in BMW touring, far from it. But hey, thanks for pointing out my website, maybe some more people will look at it and enjoy the photos or download some free GPS routes.
And while I've only been here a month, I haven't started any threads proclaiming how awesome I am and certainly am not trying to sell anyone anything. I have however posted some nice photos and some info on what we've done to set up my ladies Classic and answered what questions I could to help others.

You on the other hand, admittedly haven't posted here much beyond promoting yourself and your business. If you were such an enthusiast and cared about this community you could have started a "Ask Ken" thread so you could bestow all of us with your infinite motorbike knowledge.
You could have gone into threads that you know the answer to which, by your self-aggrandizement there shouldn't be any question you can't answer, to help us little people out.
But I don't see anything of the like, what I see is opportunistic, self serving posts so you can sell some suspension. Like you said, most posts made by us enthusiasts don't concern you. LOL

I don't care how much you love doing suspension and making peoples bike ride better, good for you to have pride in your work like just about every other tuner out there, but my point is, you're a tourist here who's spamming the forum for profit. You should restrict your spam to the forum your earned the right to profit off of.

Vendors using tech sections of forums to sell things doesn't help anyone but you, your opinion is not to be valued since the real motive is putting food on the table for your family. Keeping commercial motives out of user based communities is always better for the community. I guarantee the people who own this site want to be paid when someone is using it for business purposes and would restrict your promotions to the vendor section, but you know that already.

Your statement which was nothing but a failed attempt to discredit me with the rest of the longest paragraph you've ever written on this site is nothing but more business promotion, not so skillfully chosen to be written on a forum.
Riding history. check.
Resume of qualifications from past jobs. check.
A bunch of name dropping. check.
Heart felt words to describe your passion for selling suspension. check.

I just used my search bar to see who these people are you name drop, just to be thorough, unlike you who didn't do your research on me.

Dave Hodges
That is the only link I found with his name related to racing and it seems he's been in 5 races with 0 wins, podiums, fastest lap or anything. Not too impressive.
If that's the wrong guy, post up whomever it really is, with relevance to you.

Barry Wressell
Here's his business bio and link to his website. I don't see any mention of you, or SB suspension. While it looks like Barry has a lot of street cred' I'm not sure why that should have anything to do with why you are so awesome. I don't see any lengthy bio's of lifetime accomplishments about you anywhere... and Barry certainly doesn't mention you.

Ok, lets move on.

Jeff Ryan

Again, Jeff has a long bio with quite a few impressive accomplishments, lots of trophies, successful business and such. But, alas, I don't see any mention of you and your business anywhere. What is you relationship with Jeff that should impress us so much?
He has a innovative company that you buy products from so you can try and sell them here?
Sounds like that is it to me.

Last but not least we have your last big name drop, MotoAmerica.
Ya know, I spent a fair amount of time poking around that site, since I'm stuck on a flight home right now and for the life of me I could not find you or your businesses name anywhere. I don't see any references on your site about MotoAmerica and what you've done that's worth mentioning. Certainly didn't see some photos of anyone on podium wearing SB suspension swag.

So there you have it, the big time name dropper. IMHO people that are widely known and respected in any business don't need to name drop more successful people, especially when the dropping taking place doesn't actually show us anything as to why you are so awesome. Top tuners also don't need to spam forums to get business.
"really nice guy" is to be expected when selling someone something, not really anything that makes you special, like the couple of happy customers here say.

Here's the link to your pathetic bio, anyone who's interested in doing business with you should look at your competitors bio's just to see how weak yours is.
About Us - SB Suspension
That is the definition of mediocrity, your bio and the effort that went into writing it.

My first post was just stating your are spamming the forum and selling products I hadn't heard of since I'm not a racer, but now after your oh so sweet reply and a little research I now feel like I know you are just a little midwest suspension shop without enough talent to have a long list of racers you tuned who actually won anything.
I see nothing but obscure references on your very simple minded website.
No sponsorships listed, no actual references besides you just telling us how long you've been doing it and how much passion you have for it. Considering you've been doing it so so long and have no references like most well known tuners do and don't feel the need to have a modern website, while also drumming up business by spamming forums without taking the time to actually be a part of the community, I know now where you stand in the scheme of things.
Bottom feeder who sells many brands of suspension at retail or above prices but is the master of none.

While I'm sure that the couple of folks on here who you've got business from spamming our forum are very happy, it's not a testament to you as much as a testament to how bad the stock suspension is compared to pricey aftermarket suspension. After all nobody is racing this bike so your "tune", no matter what it is will be a vast improvement to anyone.

Good job. ;)

I'm so sorry that you need to try and knock down someone to make yourself feel like someone important in this world. As I can see I can not justify myself with such a closed minded person.

I wasn't name dropping. I was answering your rudely written question. I guess you forgot that question. I didn't do any real name dropping. If I did then that would not be in my best interest. I just spoke about people that I work with on a daily basis. People at companies that you asked about.

Since you need to belittle me and tell me that I'm a nobody suspenion tuner then I guess your right and there will be no changing your mind. I guess you know more than me.
If someone doubts my work then I put my money where my mouth is. Anyone can go to Motoworks(a Ducati Dealer) in Chicago and test drive a Scrambler with my work done to it.
You are a shining example of why I don't hang out on message boards and forums. Like you said "Happy Customers". Nothing really matters more to me than just that "Happy Customers"! My customers come first!
Have a great life Mr. Troll!

I assure you I don't need to do anything online to feel important in the world, my life is amazing. I'm no troll, it's obviously easier for you to just call me that then back up your claims or take your sales pitches somewhere else, I'm just calling it how I see it.
I just don't care for spam for the reasons I said and since this forum isn't enforcing it's own rules right now so I'm pointing it out for those of us that don't care for spam.
Your response was immediately defensive by trying to say I am a vendor spamming too, which I'm not. A childish and incorrect statement that basically acknowledges that you are indeed spamming, with undertones of it somehow matters what brand of bike I have many photos of, followed by more self promotion.
You're right, your name dropping was (kind of strange) answers to my question, I took that too far, my apologies.
Posting just to sell a product still equals spam any way you slice it.
My personal opinions aside, you are a vendor spamming this forum and you have made unsubstantiated claims about your experience in your spamming statements.
You want to tell us you tune "top pro racers" to help you sell stuff then so be it.
Doesn't really matter really my real goal is not to discredit you, it's to point out SPAM. Since you opened the door with personal attacks I just had to follow up, like would be common in a discussion on a forum. Like I said though, I have nothing to lose here speaking my mind, you on the other hand as a thin skinned vendor do.
Next time I go back to my hometown I'll try to visit Johnny and see how your work actually feels, maybe I'll like it and I would certainly say so if it was good.

But for you to harass and berate a member because he does not suit your profile shows lots of character. You are a bull, I get it.

Your credentials to pass judgement include moderating a forum and four bikes?
