Yes, it happens.

I was convinced that those things happen to others only.

Got my Classis today, 5 km from the dealer I've heard a very bad sound coming from the engine, in two seconds the noise has become very loud, and suddently the engine stopped turning.

And now I'm one of those who have bought a defective bike, that's like buying a second hand bike, repaired after an accident, paying the full price for a new one.

Sad.

This is very sad and upsetting news to hear! What sound did you hear? Have you been able to determine the cause of the failure? Please keep us informed!
Questo è molto triste e sconvolgente notizia a sentire! Che suono hai sentito? Sei stato in grado di determinare la causa del fallimento? Si prega di tenerci informati!

I'm so frustrated now. There's no short term solution, I'll have to wait a lot of time.

Off couse I will ask for a new bike. But I fear that they will try to fix mine... there will be a discussion... time... time...

The sound coming from the engine was like a percussion drill, never heard before in any engine, so strange that I've looked the mirrors to see if there was someone with a 2T without exhaust coming from behind. Than CRACK!

I've immediately got the clutch and reached the road side.

The mechanic from the dealer in 5 minutes was there with the van, after a rapid check his face expression has cleared to me everything.

He was very sorry. Me too.

He talked about defective engine, wrong tolerances... I think that there have been a lubrication problem, the engine looked very very hot everywhere.

Very unfortunate to hear this and maybe you wont be the last but lets hope you are. I suppose like they say if it is going to break it will break straight away...only saving grace really!

Lets hope you get a new bike and you hopefully you can still have faith in Ducati.

My Scramlber lost engine oil after 1 day of riding. After discussions, Ducati offered me a $1k voucher and extended warrenty but I declined to take the bike back and they gave me a new one.

It's a new model and bad publicity can harm Ducati so they'll be more likely to give you a replacement bike. Be firm about that and you will have good chances. Especially with a broken engine after 5km... that must be one of the best reasons to get a new one instead of just repairs.

They can always repair it and send it as a demo bike somewhere.

To be honest it's a bit worrying how many issues already surface with the Scramblers.

Agreed. It's one of the risks of being an early adopter. Plus, I think Ducati themselves might have been a little surprised at the interest.

Sorry to hear that this happened ammiraglio. Stick to your guns and get a replacement bike.

I am assuming that this bike was built in Italy and not Thailand?

Reckon the dealership forgot to put oil in the bike? I'd make a note of the VIN # to be certain; wouldn't want that one back. Let us know how this goes, please.

I do not have that impression. My interest in this thread is because I view it as not typical. Also, Cause has not been given.

The 696, 796, 1100 engine have been around for awhile and are well sorted.

Remember forums contain three types. 1) The really happy, and 2) the really upset. The happily content majority do not post and are out riding :D

Just as a note:

The Honda Grom just was recalled for bad fuel pumps. The 2013 Ninja 300s were recalled due to a bad ECU setting. Stalling under deceleration. Now wouldn't that be fun .

Good things. No. Would it keep me from purchasing either. No.

I always take a bike for at least a 30mile test ride before I buy. Why, cause you never know!
hey moto, I would like to do that too. I've always been a little uncomfortable with this because they give you the ol' "are you a serious buyer' speech. always makes me feel a little sheepish...kinda like they are saying, "we don't trust you" have you ever rode the 30 miles then NOT buy it?

I'm sure, I've been unlucky. (yes, after some days I'm now more positive!)

I've a MTS1200 that's just perfect.

My curiosity is about the Ducati policy regarding this kind of issues, and timing.

This model's engine is a very reliable unit (on the papers at least), coming from a well established project, tuned to be less stressed and to be able to accept a more intense use at low speeds, so with poor cooling.

It's not the air cooled unit form the '90 installed on the old monsters, the "don't stop or catch fire" 600cc engine!
On that unit, a minute more of stop in the summer at a T-junction and you'll have to buy new cylinders!

But today engine is a lot different.
