Scrambler Bogging Down

Alright guys, this is my first time posting ever anywhere. I usually just try to see if anyone has had the same issues as me and posted about it somewhere but I figured I might as well reach out and see what I can find out.

I recently purchased a 2016 Full Throttle and let me tell you, I love this bike. However, I have been having a curious issue. Every now and then, sometimes more than others, it randomly bogs down and the acceleration just pretty much takes a break. At first it only happened while I was moving so I started trying out a couple of things that I feel like you should do when purchasing a used bike:

Changed spark plugs, complete oil change along with filter, replaced air filter.

Nothing fixed the issue. Then, it started to also do it when it was sitting idling in neutral and I noticed that the headlight would also flicker as it was bogging down. This led me to believe that it was something electrical. I swapped out the battery, put in a brand new YUASA YTB12-BS (filled, vented, and fully charged). It seemed to fix the issue when I tested it out.

However, I just finished a 2.5 hour trip (roughly 150 miles) from Philly to DC. It began bogging down intermittently throughout the ride although not nearly as bad as before. I noticed that it started after I was pushing it a bit hard, going in the high 80’s for extended periods of time. I stopped, checked to make sure there weren’t any loose connections with the battery and continued moving. I decided to limit myself to not surpassing 75 mph for the rest of the trip and it seemed to really help the performance.

My questions are these:

1. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could try at this point?

2. Can pushing a bike too hard affect the battery (potentially draining it)?

I’m going to swing by cyclegear tomorrow for a fresh battery to compare with but would love to get some input from the community. PS, sorry for the grammar and awkwardness, my ears are still ringing a bit.

Possibly the rectifier/regulator, which controls the voltage to the battery, isn't working properly.
Get a hold of a multimeter, set it to the 20V dc range and measure across the battery. With the ignition off you should see at least 12.5V. When the bike is started the voltage should rise to at least 13.8V, ideally 14.4V. If the voltage isn't in these figures that's most likely your problem.

Sweet, I will test it to see at some point this week.

I will go ahead and say now that I already tried replacing the rec/reg with one from a Yamaha R1 (with an adapter) and it didn't seem to change anything.

I also replaced the stator but that also did not fix the problem.

On the last test ride, the bike died on me a couple of times when waiting at a light. The RPM's started to drop and the bike would inevitably turn off. While riding, it would bog down and then go back to normal (but not completely turn off).

I reached out to a couple of people with some more wrenching experience than me, and they mentioned that it might be a faulty wiring connection or exposed cable somewhere.

Any ideas/insight would be greatly appreciated.

If you've already replaced the reg with one from an R1 that's unlikely to be the problem. The R1uses a Shindengen MOSFET regulator and they are very reliable. They flickering headlight though does seem to indicate an electrical issue, perhaps a bad connection somewhere. Fuse 1 (10A) supplies both the ECU and the dash and the dash provides the power to the headlight. So this may be somewhere to start looking.

If you've already replaced the reg with one from an R1 that's unlikely to be the problem. The R1uses a Shindengen MOSFET regulator and they are very reliable. That will be the first thing I check tonight! Thank you and will update with results

Hey did you ever figure out how to fix your bogging issue on your scrambler? I’m having the same issue on mine but only after I ride on the freeway and go to side streets and after a couple miles it goes back to normal and not bogging down.
