So i pretty much smoked the first 1000 KM in under 2 weeks and the service light poppt right on. Called my dealer in Munich and got slapped with a appointment 4 weeks away.

Naturally i got a bit worried, not only because of the dirty oil pumping through my bike but also about the tought that i would have to go easy on the riding...

So i went to my dealer to have a little chat, as a result i pushed way beyond the service point, went on a little Austrian tour and the bike is still going strong.

So to everyone who is worring about that little light, just dont. As long as the oil level is good, there should be no problems.

A couple of main points of the first service:

1. During run in, the bearings, pistons, rings, bushes etc "bed in" and microscopic bits of metal wear off as parts mate to each other, and are carried away by the oil along with dust & other bits of debri from manufacture and assembly. Usually the oil in the bike during run in period is designed for this purpose, not for prolonged running. Changing it at first service gets these unwanted items out of the engine, along with changing to filter which will have collected it. Then you have fresh clean oil.....ahhhhhh.

2. Check torquing of various fasteners around the bike that may have loosened since manufacture as the bike settles in.

I'm not sure what you are getting at OP in saying that you can run the bike to 2,000 Km on the break in oil and that its "going strong".

You could run it to 5,000 km and everything would appear to be "going strong" but the reality is that you are risking damage to your engine and causing undue wear and tear because of the amount of crap that's sloshing around in there.

If there is one thing most mechanics agree about when it comes to engine maintenance, it's that clean oil = longer engine life and better performance. Look at the other threads on this forum that show what the oil looks like after the first 1,000 kms and you'll see why the oil should be changed earlier.

I understand that you were told by the dealer that "all will be fine just bring it in on the appointment date." Dealers do this all the time as they don't want you to get the service done elsewhere and lose the $. However, be aware that "Ducati Motor Holding spa" is the decider of warranty coverage vs not covered should you have a failure in the future. The dealer provides information and perhaps a recommendation but the decision is solely up to Ducati and be sure the dealer will have "forgotten" their advice to you that you were fine to exceed the recommended service intervals. This I know from experience. Read the owners manual and warranty book. The terms are that you have all recommended services performed at their appointed km/mile intervals. Doing otherwise can void your warranty. While you are seriously outside the warranty interval, CHANGE YOUR OIL! NOW! That way you at least help prevent further internal wear from all the crud floating about in the original oil. Good luck.
