I will be changing rear shock this week and need to buy a jack. Will likely get a trolley jack and use that with a wood block but I have a question. At what point is it safe to lift the bike? Would jacking it up on the flatter black bottom of engine beside the catalyst be the best place?

Yes i have never done this before :)

Yes.

I have jacked the Classic up twice now to change the shock and then to do some work on the forks, the spot you describe is where I went, near the oil drain plug. I used a small piece of flat stock aluminum between the jack and the engine with the front or rear wheel strapped into a floor stand that's bolted to the garage floor. Nice and sturdy. I'm not sure how well the bike would balance on a trolly jack without one of the wheels secured, it's only kind of flat on the bottom of the engine with all the various shapes. Maybe have another person hold the bike while you swap the shock to be safe, and I would recommend getting the bolts loosened before you jack it up, it take a lot of torque to get the lower bolt removed, at least on the Classic we have it did.

Good luck!

Thanks Lost, I do have a front wheel chock that is secure as well as the ability to tie up the handlebars to an overhead beam as a secondary measure. I decided on a simple scissor jack in the end with a block of wood so will give that a try :)

Lost a quick question seeing as you have experience with changing the shock. I can not see how to get a torque wrench onto the top nut (workshop manual shows the nut at back is to be torqued) as there is not much space. Can you advise what you did to overcome this or did you just torque up the hex bolt at the front and not the rear nut?

Thanks for taking the time to offer advice :)

I just torqued from the front, adding a small amount of blue threadlike to the nut. There's barely enough room to get a box wrench in there, not sure how they think that should be done...

Also, at least on the Classic we have the lower bolt hole in the swingarm tolerances are very tight against the cap of the bolt, I would suggest adding a squirt of lube to the hole in the swingarm before taking the bolt out.

Good luck and glad to help!

Nice comparison, wish I had found it sooner, but it was buried in the "Scrambler Australia" section.

One note of clarification, though...

You mention that the Nitron has adjustment of both compression and rebound (with a single adjustment point), and the Ohlins rebound only - which is not correct. The rebound adjustment on the Ohlins has an effect of compression damping in the same manner as the Nitron.

All of these units have an integral gas separating piston (as opposed to an emulsion type unit), which means that all work in the same basic fashion. Only differences would be how accurate they got with the shim stacks (valving).

Thanks Tony,

I didn't realise that, I was repeating the info supplied by the manufacturers web sites.

I also didn't understand how "buried away" it was over on the other forum. So, does this mean there are more people on this forum or that it's searches are better?
Since posting the link on here theres been more views and feedback in 24 hours than the other site in 5 days.
I'll update this forum later today.

Hey Smifff,

I don't want to speak for Tony, but I was thinking the regional forums (Australia, in your case) are for posting social events, ride meet-ups and such, specific to that area....???
