India launch/delivery updates

Visited the Ducati showroom in Delhi and had a chat with Ducati India folks on Sunday (4th April).

Scrambler launch is scheduled for 2nd half of April. Deliveries of Icon's first batch are currently planned for mid May. This batch will have only a limited number of yellow Icons. No commitment of launch or delivery dates yet for Red Icon, Classic, Enduro or FT models.

Things are a bit 'fluid' at the moment, with no formal announcement of the official Scrambler price list or even the exact launch date but the showroom is accepting Icon bookings by payment of a token sum of INR 50,000 (approx. US$ 800). Scrambler display models & merchandise will only reach the showrooms by the launch date.

Not just the Scrambler, but brand Ducati itself is brand spanking new in India. Accordingly, the gala official launch of Ducati's Gurgaon showroom, purportedly the largest in Ducati's global network, is also planned for mid May.

Thanks for the report. I just got back from New Delhi March 30, but didn't think to visit the Gurgaon showroom. It really says good things about international assessment India's future that they will have Ducati's largest showroom worldwide. So . . . will you be putting down a deposit on a Scrambler?????? I saw lots of Hero Honda 150s, and some Royal Enfield 500s, but nothing larger on 2 wheels; I can imagine a Scrambler could be quite a star in the frightening New Delhi traffic.

Yes I did! I was leaning more towards the Classic or at least the red Icon, but given that there was no clarity on their availability, decided to put down the deposit for the yellow beast.

Delhi traffic is frightening indeed. In my opinion, it has the dubious distinction of being home to the largest population of scratched & dented luxury cars! :D

While one doesn't get to see many cool bikes during the daily commute, on the weekends there are several favourite locations of Delhi bikers where one can see the full complement (Harley Davidsons, KTMs, Triumphs, Ninjas and many more), typically early in the mornings - DND expressway leading to Noida, the NH8 expressway in Gurgaon, the twisties between Gurgaon & Faridabad etc.

Some more updates

Got an update from the local dealer today. Good news on all fronts - the first shipment of Scramblers has hit the Indian shores and going through clearances/paperwork at the Bombay port right now. The displays are ready & test ride bikes should be in the showrooms by end of next week.

More importantly, there are a few 'faster ones' in this shipment and I could be riding out with mine as early as first week of May.

The official price list has also been finally released today and the Icon Red will cost me approx. $11.9k (INR 756,634) on road in my city. The yellow variant is a few hundred dollars more.

Update on the India scene:

Some Icons have already been unleashed on the Indian roads in Bombay & Delhi. There is no waiting list at the only dealer in the country or a formal order management system and the yellow Icons are readily available. I saw the yellow version in the flesh for first time last week and IMO the pictures don't do justice to the magnificent beast.

I failed to become the first owner of a Scrambler in the country despite being the first to put a DP but did manage to become the first victim of the greenhorns at the brand new dealership - someone else rode off with my Red Icon out of turn last weekend.
Since I do not want the yellow version, I will now have to wait for the next shipment from Thailand. This shipment might have a couple of Urban Enduros too. No information on availability of FT or Classic yet.

As for my Red icon, there are no firm dates for the shipment yet and after my recent experience not much hopes of a smooth transaction either. I will just have to grit my teeth and wait patiently, pending any more 'dilettante disasters' at the hands of the dealer.

Not that many avenues to choose from Pete. Got an update that my 'second' Red Icon will now be in by mid of June.
Spent some quality time with a yellow Icon over the weekend, courtesy the local dealer trying to make amends for my heartache.

Clocked about 7 - 8 hours in typical urban conditions in a thankfully gentle
north Indian month of May.
( Mostly evening and early morning, with temperatures ranging between 28 to 34 degrees C, relatively low humidity levels).

I don't have anything new to add to the riding experience, everything relevant has already been discussed by the extremely knowledgable and resourceful folks on this forum.

Sharing my thoughts on a few India specific aspects:

  • Bike’s exhaust and horn are not audible at all in typical city traffic. You may or may not want to join the chorus. But IMO, consider adding aftermarket upgrades to enhance safety.
  • No provision for front number plates. Please try & avoid ugly contraptions from dealers.
  • Minimum Recommended fuel is RON95 & ideally one should use RON97 for this type of a bike, tank capacity is 13 litres. These two factors could be an issue for some inter-city highway riders. YMMV :D
  • Under seat heat at traffic stops is noticeably high, even for the pillion. No issues when the bike is moving.
  • Nimble and flickable nature is a great asset in bumper to bumper urban traffic.
  • I found the ride comfort on typical Delhi roads to be just fine. Riding over those unmarked, stealth series of mini speed breakers is not pleasant though.

Shared some more pics in the Yellow Icon pictures thread.

Great picture! Signs in background even match the bike! Good luck getting your own Scrambler soon, dealer should do something more to atone IMO.
thanks @fastwoman. That signboard thing was purely by chance rather than any relevant photography skills. :)

Yes the dealer needs to be more careful. I've made sure that this slip up has got some senior management attention.
Hopefully my efforts will avoid a repeat for future Ducati buyers in the country. Other than that, I can only wait for the next batch to arrive from Thailand.

Till then, I'm busy shortlisting accessories and getting as familiar as I can with the Scrambler.
Very soon Urban enduro will be launched after having had some problems with the Olive color. This color is reserved for army vehicles in India but it has been proven that is not exactly the same army color banned. Hence the Urban Enduro is hitting the india mkt soon.
enjoy...
