My mirrors were pointing straight at the ground behind me the whole way home from the dealership. It turns out that the adjustment for 'up and down' was not possible because the mirrors were stuck in one position, even after loosening the lock down nuts. My hunch is that the factory paint dried and the mirrors locked to the threads on the stalks. Here's what I did.

After you break the mirror lose from the stalk you'll be able to set it up to your liking. Then just lock the 12mm nut down when you're happy. After you get it set, you are able to make fine adjustments by hand for left to right and just a bit of up and down. They're wide angle convex mirrors, so the world is always going to look a bit funky behind you.

I think if the dealership fiddles with it they can get them to a good spot, but my mirrors were both frozen to the stems and had to be cracked loose with the bigger wrench. Dealers encountering that might want to just leave them alone in case they were to break them.

Super thanks!

Thanks for the screen shots, complete with drop-shadow the the lettered-steps!!!

This really helped me with my spanking new Classic, as I was miffed taking it out on the first ride, finding that I couldn't adjust the mirrors at all. I followed your advice to the letter, and I can now see my behind!

Thanks!

Just want to add to what silverlux wrote up: there is a ball and socket joint hidden by a panel on the back of the mirror that allows for better on-the-fly adjustment. The B&S joint comes a bit tight from the factory and just needs to be loosened up a little bit.

You can see how to do it right here: https://youtu.be/WZxmWEPGrLg?t=1m28s
(cuts right to the ball & socket part)
