In my quest for vintage look lids with modern safety features I came across this beautiful Phil Read replica from Arai (Vector 2) and have my heart set on it.

Unfortunately size L (59 to 60cm) is not in stock, only size (57 to 58cm) is available. My head measurement seems to be 58.5cm. Trials are not available as this is an online deal. Question is, will I be able to squeeze comfortably into size M of Arai Vector 2? My current lid, a Momo Avio is also size M (58cm) and fits me fine, although I might be (literally) comparing apples to oranges here.

Many thanks in advance for your help!

Find a local ARAI stockist and try a lid on for size your not obliged to buy. As it goes I am a medium AGV and ARAI the same.

I run into the problem that I have an oval crown and round cheeks.. So a lot of helmets that fit me in the top don't fit me in the bottom and vice versa.

I haven't found a good way to verify helmet fitment other than trying them on. The descriptions online vary wildly and then end up not applying to my head shape anyway.

Are you able to buy that helmet and return it for free if it doesn't fit right? That's my plan in the future for any NEW riding gear, buying from the shops that kind of charge a premium price but have no-hassle return policies.

That's a good looking helmet for sure.

I've had two Arai Quantum helmets and they are both size Medium and both fit me properly in terms of safe wearing. I have a size 7 (inches) hatsize in the USA, so your head is bigger than mine. I think this helmet may be too tight for you, but that's just my opinion. It may smash the padding eventually, but you might be suffering headaches until that point.

@albie: my local Arai dealer doesn't stock Vector 2's. he has other models. since Arai has so many different internal shapes, trying on a different model might not mean a thing.
@silverluxe, yes that's what I'm planning now. I'll order it and if it doesn't fit, I'll ship it back to them. I also follow the same preferences - I don't mind paying the extra coin but I prefer generous return policies.

Have you tried Premier Helmets, their retro line looks quite cool

thank you @Malcolm Reynolds for sharing that one, I did consider that one - my only doubt was lack of ventilation.

@dukes that looks like a good one too. Although not a retro design, I will add it to my shortlist for sure. The same seller who has the Arai, has this one in my size, at about half the price point of Arai and I might pull the trigger on this one, going by all the feedback received so far on size & fit. I just hope I'm not sacrificing too much on safety & other build features.

You really need to try helmets on - it's almost impossible to advise as everyone's head shape is different. Even helmets within the same manufacturer can fit differently! I measure a small size but when I went to try some helmets on at a shop it was amazing how all the 'small' sizes did not fit the same.

I almost ordered a medium in a Shoei, as the small was very tight fitting, but went with the small and am glad I did as I think it it the right fit for me. And after a while that 'tight' fit will ease so you are not so strangled ;).

But if it is too uncomfortable then it might be too small and you may have to go a size up. Trouble is, you won't know really till you have worn the thing for a fair while and that isn't possible

You are so right @littleowl. It's very difficult to buy a helmet without trying it on.

I'll only try for a retro look as far as practical, else I'll pull the trigger on a tried & tested Shoei GT Air in my size.

Malcolm, that was my first choice and I'd tried it on in a local shop, but that lid just didn't sit right on my head - size M was tight in places and Size L felt wobbly.

That's the one I've got :). It did fit a lot more snug than my Arai but after wearing it on rides it seems to be right.

I tied on the Scrambler open helmet in small, I could hardly get it over my ears and it fit really snug to my cheeks but the head had loads of space!

Today I finally decided on this Premier helmet in size L. Hope it works out for me. Thank you to all with their excellent suggestions. Premier is not a very popular helmet around here and I couldn't find any owners for feedback but at least I saved some coins over the Arai.
