Go Pro Help

Hi everyone,

I want to get a Go Pro for my helmet and any other shenanigans I plan to get into but I can't decide between the more affordable Hero 3 and the Hero 4. What is the difference between the 2 cameras and is the Hero 4 black better than the normal Hero 4?

Thanks for the help!

In my opinion, the 4 is better for ease of use but the quality is nearly identical to the 3. The 3 is easily the better value for the money. I have the 3(black) and have not even thought of upgrading mine. Well at least not until they cam out with the new one, the small GoPro Session. But I still think I will wait.

Others will tell you to go with the 4 simply because of the touchscreen LCD, I disagree with their logic.
I believe the 4 is smaller than the 3. Just slightly though. I too only have the Hero3 and don't see a need to upgrade yet. I can hold out for the next version. There are a number of youtube videos comparing the video quality between the two cameras.
Also consider this.

I have one and it's great. It comes with a handy wireless remote control. Also it has "Loop" feature. This is like time travel. You can record the past! So if something surprising or exciting just happened, Like your dirt bike buddy crashing embarrassingly, then you can hit the button when you have stopped laughing, and it will save it.
This way you dont have to leave it recording all the time and then edit later, or run the risk of memory running out.. Just record the bits worth saving, and still after they happened. Top!

The 3 and 4 are the same size.

We have the 3+ black and 4 silver and they fit perfectly in each others cases.

If I could only have 1 it would be the 4 silver as its marginally better and has built in touch screen. I have no need to video of more than 1080P @ 60FPS.

The new 4 session has been shown to be a compromise in that the camera quality isn't as good as the proper 4 (Though you'd expect that when you look at its size).

I think if you have to ask its better to go with the 3 unless you want the back screen. the other difference between 3 and 4 is mostly video quality. but 3 is so good that you won't need a 4...
Unless you are a cinematographer, which apparently you are not since you don't know the difference of 3 and 4 ;)

I have a 3 and its more than enough.
I started from HD, then skipped everything in between and got the 4 BLACK, and recently added Session

In terms of video quality, BLACK is unchallenged.. I bring it for trips cause I can take time to swap out the cases if required.

In terms of sheer convenience, Session is just awesome! No case required, and no more Teletubbies! I mount mine side way on the helmet. Wind noise reduction can be better though... and footage is decent for my purpose (to make drivers like this famous)

I plan to dive with the camera too so it has to do well in poor lighting. Maybe I'll go with the hero 4 silver. Thanks for the help everyone!

That's what I have. I really like it and it's large built-in LCD back.

well that depends on your benchmark & expectations ;)
Holy cow! That square alone costs around 6k lol.

I'll stick with a plain old 1 sided go pro.

If I ever meet you I'll swap stories. I think I saw your pic on Duc Sgp FB feed when you bought your FT.
