So... I've made it this far. A beautiful Scrambler in my garage that I can commute to work on and that my wife and I have already immensely enjoyed cruising around on up little canyon roads and around town. Close to 200 miles on the odometer after the first weekend, and working my way to the first service. Just got a call from the dealer to remind me to schedule my service in advance, so I asked what it would cost me... THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY BONES. That's $350 USD. I literally cannot afford that 2 weeks after buying the bike. That's where this post comes in....

Can anybody give a brief description of what takes place at the first service? I'm a young man with a garage and time on the weekends- I'm ready to service my bike with a little guidance from someone knowledgeable. A walk-through with some simple photos would be AWESOME, but anything will do. The dealership told me my warranty would be intact as long I keep receipts of the things I buy and record the service I do. Sounds easy enough.

In the USA you typically can't force anyone to ever show up at the dealership (at least for buying a car) and then not honor the warranty. I don't have my bike, so I have no idea what they're doing other than changing the oil and resetting the service lamp. That will be the one thing that would annoy me, having the service engine lamp lit up.

Otherwise if they're worth their salt, hopefully they do the check list items AND go around looking at all of the fasteners, checking chain tension, and anything else that would be a common safety check.

$350.00 is an ouch. I imagine oil can't cost more than 50 of those dollars, even if it's the best stuff in the world.

$350?????? What a scam. Do not go there! My guy in san diego quoted 200 for first service. I know this for sure since he is honoring free first service oil change if you put a deposit down prior to the end of January. I did it the first week of Feb and he, the owner, told me he would honor that, a $200 value. GO ELSEWHERE or do it yourself for sure. imo:D

Since I was bored, I downloaded the owners manual for a Monster 796. Here's the 600 mile service checklist:

-Change the engine oil
-Change the engine oil filter
-Check the brake fluid levels
-Check tire pressure and wear
-Check the brake pads. Renew if necessary. (!?)
-Check the drive chain tension, alignment, and lubrication.
-Road test the motorcycle.

So it sounds like the only thing you really need to do is procure some 15w50 synthetic oil of your choice and find a new oil filter.

Yeah, also from further research, it appears that the 796 with a wet clutch might work better with 10w40 semi-synthetic oil like Motul 5100. I'll just quit talking now until I actually own the bike and have the user manual in my hand :)

For me, I don't mind going to see the dealer, but it's more a matter of when I can get around to it because they're 40 miles away and I work the same hours they do.

That's what I'm hoping for as well. Does Ducati charge the dealers to hook the bikes up to their computer? More and more it's becoming a power grab that the dealers themselves can't even help you if their equipment is offline from the manufacturer over in the homeland. I ran into this with a Volvo and getting the ECU flashed. The program had to come from Sweden and it had to know about my car's information, etc... It's beneficial for the manufacturer, but they shouldn't charge money for it.
