This is my first Ducati so I'm not used to their quirks yet

Yesterday I went for a ride in the spring sunshine:)
Heading into a really tight turn (90 degree) I dropped to second and used the engine breaking to get my speed right. As soon as I could I opened the throttle fairly quickly. I was expecting to roar out of the bend but instead the engine stopped:eek:

The engine was at working temp. I pulled in the clutch and as soon as I was rolling straight I dropped it to bump start but that was like slamming the brakes on lol. I then used the starter button and if fired up straight away.

At this stage I'm not really concerned as it seemed like I'd just confused the engine by shutting the throttle hard then opening it quickly. Is this a Ducati thing?

Two bikes ago I had a Yamaha MT03 660 single and it would often stop in similar circumstances. My local dealer said it wasn't uncommon for that engine so I learned to live with it

I've done 620 miles so almost 1st service time.

Any thoughts ?

Pete

When I had an 848 I went solely to an indep tech. He asked me once if the engine ever turned off for me during engine braking. I said no and never asked him what he meant. Maybe I should now...

I have more than 3000 km now, live in the mountains, love and use a lot the engine brake. This has never occured to me, and it would have if it was normal. It's definitively not ok. Injection electronics should not allow for that.
Unless it was your odd freak fuel line air bubble or water contamination.

When it's fixed, can you let us know what it was?

How do you find its power going up on inclines?

This is as also happened to me this weekend. Going from 3rd to 2nd with a small throttle blip, the engine cut out, the bike fire straight up on the starter button, and rode fine all the way home, however this is not the only time it has happened, it also happened on the first day approaching a roundabout I thought it was me, but seeing i was on a straight road this time slowing down with no aggressive acceleration/braking, its making me think there is a serious problem, goes with out saying its going back to dealer for a look, hope they fine something and can be sorted, thank goodness for warranties.

have done 3200 miles on the bike now, and this has happened twice for me to.
it seemed to happen within the first 1000 miles, and haven't had a problem since except once in a while having false neutrals between 4 and 5 or 5 and 6 (when going up in gears).

Do let me know what the outcome is.

This is dangerous. Can't see any reason why it should be 'accepted'. (Wouldn't accept it in an airplane...)

False neutrals also, between 5 & 6, have you asked your dealer about that?

Nix not yet. Doesn't happen very often tbh. Had maybe max 10 false neutrals over 3500 miles so far.
I think i'll try and keep track of it, if I start noticing it more then I'll go and check, same if I have another engine cutout.
Tbh, I noticed in plenty of reviews prior to getting the scrambler that many people seemed to get false neutral, so just assume the gearbox set-up just isn't top notch. Will probably get better for the next iterations.

Also I'm used to second hand bikes, and even my old suzuki's with amazing gearboxes still gave me false neutrals once in a (little bit more rare) while.

I put mine down to not being positive enough with shifting, its getting better, I also came from a Suzuki where the shift was very easy.

Just a quick update on my engine stopping problem. It did happen again, so three times its stopped now, so I asked if the dealer could look at it, which they did and surprise surprise they cant find a problem, but to their credit they are still looking and hopefully they will ring today with an answer. The have looked at the engine map and diagnostics which no reported issues or problem. Very weary of taking it back if they cant find a problem as the last time it happen i was going around around-about and it [email protected]@t me up, i really though I was going down. I will keep you posted with the results.

My Scrambler has done this a few times as well. When blipping the throttle to change down to 1st or when blipping from neutral to 1st from a standstill. Is this a lean fuelling problem?

Simon
Sounds like same problem as I am having, dealer as contacted Ducati HQ and they have told me they have checked there international database if there has been any other reports, however mines the only one which has reported this problem, although there is three people on here that's having similar issues, might be worth pointing your dealer in the direction of the forum if they say yours is the only one. The last I heard from the dealer is that Ducati have told them to ride it to for a extended period see if it happens for them, not sure what this solve except put mileage on it, it might do it for them but seeing there was 300 miles between the 1st and 2nd incidents I can't see getting back for a while. It's really taken the edge off owning a bike I love and a iconic brand.

Well after a week and a half and numerous phone calls I am getting my bike back on Tuesday with.... A we can't find a problem. Just to start with I have no problems with how I have been dealt with by the dealership they have been very good, in keeping in touch etc. but now I'm at a sticky point, it's made really think about keeping the bike, which is a shame as its my first Ducati, and it's been a dream of mine to own one for some time, after a series of ok but reliable Japanese bikes. But I can't trust it and on a bike that can be a dangerous thing, also it's made me think the old ducatis aren't reliable comment is true, and I really didn't want to believe it, if any body asks me about my Ducati experience, unfortunalty it will be a negative one, not on the dealership or ducatis customer service but there product, now I realise this is only my experience and a lot of you will be happy with your experience, and I'm sure some of you have had really bad experiences with other brands, but I haven't until know. So this maybe good bye for my Ducati dream, it really has put a big cloud over something I instantly fell in love with, which I think makes it seem worst than something you like but not get a attached to, hopefully I will feel different when I've slept on it.
