As some have said, the aluminium panels do mark very easily. I noticed some scratch marks after I had heated gear wiring installed, and thought I had caught the connector between my leg and the panel. But after tucking the connector securely away I saw it had got worse - then realised it was actually a seam in my leather trousers which was rubbing on the panel every time I change gear!

Luckily as I plan to change the colour of the panel I'm not too bothered - but if you want to keep it original it's worth taking note. I think my leg must be just the right length to keep catching it as other people haven't commented! It is just the left hand panel, the right hand one is fine.

Is there an air gap around the back side of the panel so that you have room to cover these in vinyl or leather?

I'm thinking of ideas for once mine shows up. I still think masking off the part where your legs rub and either applying a clear vinyl sticker or painting it black or gray with bed liner for a truck would make a protective, scratch free zone.

But I'd think the rest of it will inevitably be scratched at a later date by brush and weeds. At least the way I plan on using the bike, that is.

Yes there's quite a big gap between panel and tank so you should be able to cover it in whatever you fancy :). My panels have gone off to be powder coated

Gone off where? Wouldn't have a clue where to send things for powder coating...
Call any autobody repair shop and they will know (or they will do on site) where to get powder coating and painting done. If you're cheap and eccentric you can do it yourself at home with a used toaster oven and the spray powder purchased from the internet.

If it sits proud of the tank it begs to have some sort of space age light show happening inside there for night time visuals, haha.

Are the panels steel or are they aluminum?
I *think* they are brushed aluminium, but I'm no expert.

A local galvanisers who also do powder coating. I wouldn't risk doing that myself, it's costing me £30 as opposed to whatever the cost of replacement Scrambler panels are (£200?).

I reckon it would look aeesome. Let me know if you get a quote as I think black with a red icon does not look right but chrome...yeah baby
Each to their own, I love the black panels - you can get a pair of chrome Ducati ones for £212.46 . I couldn't chance anything with that finish after seeing how I rub the tank!
