Difficult choice

Hi Guys,

I'm facing a difficult choice and I can use a piece of advice from the community. I placed an order back in April on an Icon, with a P.O stating I'd take a red or yellow, which ever comes first (I'm in France, hence the weak english). I was supposed to be delivered before end of May. We are now well into June, and I still have no bike. Moreover, my dealer cannot tell me anything about delivery. He hopes it will be there in a few days, but it could also well be there in October, he has no clue.
I chose to go with the Icon because I planned on doing mods like most of us, especially because I really don't like the colors. I would have loved to go with a Classic, but the price premium and the fact that they would be delivered later put a hold on this feeling.
And now my dealer announced me that he has a classic on order, and that it could very well arrive before the Icon I ordered (or at the same time). Mind you guys we're talking days before, not weeks or months.

So I'm down to one question: Shall I stick to my Icon order, wait for it to arrive, and start the mods, or pay the premium, settle on the classic, wait for it to arrive, and do little to no mods as it fits my taste?

What would you guys do?

I'm in pretty much the same boat as you Jimmy. Been waiting for 3 months for my Icon.

From what I've read on this forum that seems to be the average waiting time in most locations. So your wait time is not very far off from others.
(except for a few lucky bastards - and I'm totally jealous of them >:D )

Classic vs Icon is a personal choice so only you can make a decision on it. But a few days wait time for one vs the other is totally irrelevant IMO. You have to live with that choice for years and years. One should not make a decision based purely on that kind of wait time.

Common sense says there are more Icons in production than the specials be it UE, Classic or the FT, so I would put my money on an Icon showing up faster than any other. It could be the dealer's trick to meet their quarterly sales targets.

Hope this helps. Hang in there buddy and enjoy the wait by browsing accessories for your bike. :)

I had heart set on a red Icon. Waited just over 4 months. Dealer gets little info from Ducati and a few days before mine was announced as on its way dealer got an FT and UE in of which I could have had either. I decided to wait as I wanted the saving to spend on my own preferred mods and good thing I did as the next day dealer was told mine would be with him in a week.

Nothing wrong with the Classic but would you really be happy if yours arrived a week after picking up the Classic?
Thanks for the tips guys. Part of me settling for the icon was because of longer lead times for the classic. Now that they should show up almost at the same time, and considering that because my order has already been delayed, maybe I can get a little something from my dealer, I might try to dig the Classic way. That's of course unless my phone rings in a day or so to announce me my icon is on its way... Difficult choice indeed, but I know I'll be happy with either one!

:D Gorgeous indeed!

I emailed the dealer to discuss how I could change my order from the Icon to the Classic should the latter one show up in a not so distant future. I assume switching to a more expensive bike should not be a problem, but you never know.

Anyway, I am sure I will be very happy with whatever bike I end up having! Can't wait to hit the numerous twisty roads of my native french alps!
I was in the same spot as you... Ordered a red icon and then received a deal to change it with a urban enduro (i would have received the icon probably at the end of July).

Im driving a Urban Enduro since last week and it is AWESOMEEEEEEE :D
Hey guys,

Its really interesting that dealers can't give you more accurate delivery dates. I put my order in December and the dealer said it would arrive by April 15th. And it did!

If its days then stick with your original plan and get what you ordered. I got the FT but now that I see from the forums and all Icon is a lot more customizeable in terms of color options.

But what ever you decide I hope you get it soon..
Ducati's info is vague at it's best and seeing the demand seemed to of out stripped supply, more vagueness incoming I fear.....
I feel bad for you guys because my only dealer within 50 miles has two of them just sitting on the floor waiting for buyers. Supply and demand is really weird depending on what pocket of the USA you live in.

No doubt, here in Seattle they can barely keep the demo on the floor. They have also taken more, according to them, preorders than anywhere else in the country. But, they are getting them in just as slow as everyone else. They just got a FT and EU a couple days ago, both emoji bikes I am told. Crazy how it is working.

In Singapore it was the same; all four models on the floor - I picked the one I wanted and it will be mine tomorrow. I suspect here the classic might be the hard one to get hold off out of all of them - there were two on the floor and one had a sold sign on it and someone else was looking it over.

@Asiaoildude nice to meet you here. Was living in Singapore for a long time and worked for O&G too! Have fond memories of racing up the N-S expressway and other trails in Malaysia. Hope you are planning on some too. I had a TW200 back then.

If you don't mind me asking, what's the total damage for an Icon including COE and road tax over there?

Being in France, I can confirm that supply is weird as well. I live 400kms from the Ducati Worldwide HQ. That does not help me getting a bike faster. And my dealer has little to no clue about delivery times, which, IMHO, is the hardest bit to swallow. Being told "ok, I'm sorry, your bike is two weeks late" is acceptable. Being told "I have no idea when it's gonna be here. It can be the day after tomorrow or it can be October", it's another story.

Hopefully, everything will be forgotten the moment I sit on my new bike!

The key word here is "settle". Buy once. Buy right. Get the Classic if that what speaks to you. The extra few $ mean very little over the length of time you'll own the bike (and no, I don't work for Ducati;)

Hi - I missed your post Outofthebox. It was S$27,000 on the road including COE, insurance etc. COE is now $6509 for a bike!
The concept of COE would actually lead to people in the USA picking up arms and revolting against the government I think :)

Where I live people celebrate their right to no emissions testing and the right to drive anything that moves and you can hammer a VIN number into with a steel stamp kit.
I could see them 'trying' to implement anything as a tax/fee in New England. They are looking for ways to get back the tax from more fuel efficient / electric vehicles.
