DID chains have a long history of excellence. It's reasonably uncommon though not impossible for any manufacturers' chain to fail. Sadly, if the chain was maintained too tight, that could easily have been the cause of the linkage failure, not to mention requiring a sprocket and counter sprocket at 8K miles. Plus, purchasing a used bike, one never knows about the maintenance history, even if the vehicle was "well maintained". So do your research on purchasing a new chain, sprocket(suggest steel) and counter sprocket(suggest steel), maintain the chain tension per Ducati's recommendation, keep it clean and lubed and hopefully you'll avoid having that unfortunate experience again. P.S. your Scrambler was not designed to leap tall buildings. Keep the shiny side up.
