When I first saw the Scrambler at World Ducati Week, my first thought was, "Cafe Racer!" I've been jonesin' to build one for years, but I'm not about to go back to 70s 'performance' (that means you, CB400), and there are few--if any--decent platforms for a cafe racer in the past 20 years.

I've been painting and illustrating for years, but only recently combined my passion for drawing with my passion for motorbikes. Now that the Scrambler is nearing release, I decided to put pen to paper and flush out my cafe racer design. Next step is to get my hands on one and see how feasible such a build would be.

I'm sure everyone who's got one on order can't wait to begin customizing theirs, so here's a little fuel for the fire:

Awesome rendering, really nice.

While I commend your work and think it looks very very good, I just have to comment on the cafe racer aspect that seems to be of interest to some, or a lot, here.

I like cafe racers, but why would you want to convert the Scrambler to a cafe racer? That completely makes it not a scrambler anymore. I'm not trying to be an ass here, I'm just wondering, honestly.

Thanks, everyone. I do sell some of my paintings, but I'm not so sure if I want to part with this one. I'd be happy to do a set of art prints, though. Typically my prints are ~$30 and paintings range from $80-$2000. Something like this one would be in the $250 range....but again, I'm quite fond of it and would hate it if someone made an offer I couldn't refuse.

I anticipated this response, which is why I offered justification in my original post. Basically I want a cafe racer. Always have. But all the good platforms (Honda CBs, Yamaha XSs/SRs, Suzuki GSs) are 20-40 years old and I don't want to deal with rusty frames, carbs, engines that need to be rebuilt, etc. I like projects, but only in weekend form.

So that leaves something like a Triumph Thruxton or Harley as a foundation for a Cafe Racer build. Hated the Thruxton I rode--clunky transmission, shoddy brakes, oil tanker steering and boring exhaust note--and heavy. Harley...ha, no....maybe as a flat tracker build, but not a Cafe style bike.

Enter the Scrambler. It fits the bill...and let's be honest, what really makes it a Scrambler? High bars. That's about it. (If Ducati released the bike with bars 7" lower and called it a Scrambler would anyone have been convinced?).

But all the above is kind of academic. When it comes down to it, I want a DUCATI cafe racer. (Why not a Sport 1000? Too big and chunky. And too beautiful to tear it up and do my own thing.) Besides, genuine cafe racers began their life as something else and were repurposed by their owners to do and be exactly what they wanted.

Working on a second cafe design. :) More of my Ducati-related artwork can be found here:
