Had a great blast on the Scrambler today, big smile on my face when I got home.

Had an epiphany on the ride as to why I love this little bike so much.

It's like bikes used to be. At least it reminds me of the motorcycles if my youth.

Not the fastest, not the best handling, not the best braking, not the best suspension.

But the sum of it's modest parts, equals so much more. It's called 'fun'.

Just got to find time to fit my Termi and engine bash plate.>:D

The fact that the scrambler looks like and has the upright ergonomics of the motorcycles of our youth definitely plays a big part in the affection many of us feel for the scrambler.

Me and my little Brother had taco 44 mini-bikes with a 3hp briggs & stratton
engine when we were in grammar school. But when the honda 50cc mini-trail came out that was the coolest thing I'd ever seen and would have given anything for it. Just look at it......it looks like a baby scrambler.

Later in high school I purchased a friend's 1971 Kawasaki 500cc two-stroke triple. Otherwise known as the Mach III or H1. It was the fastest production motorcycle in 1971 although I got it around 1976. Although quick for its time, it was a terrible motorcycle and when when I broke the clutch lever after a couple of months of riding I let it sit for a decade before I finally got it working again and sold it.

It has taken the motorcycle industry 40 years to get me excited about a motorcycle again. It's not just the looks of the scrambler though, it's the whole package. The scrambler is light, has a low center of gravity, low seat height, high handle bars, has the torque of a steam locomotive (well, pretty torky), and handles great. For my kind of riding which is a combination of twisties and small city traffic it's nearly perfect. And I almost forgot to mention, the 803cc L-twin is the best sounding motorcycle engine bar none.

It's why I bought it. It reminded me of the basic bikes from the 70's we used to strip down and go racing with. Or start changing bits and ride the mountain or coastal roads with your friends.

I've never been a hipster. I have always been, "that guy who rides motorcycles" and always will be.

Agree, and disagree...

FAR from the fastest.

Pretty darn good handling.

Absolutely AWFUL suspension.

Can't agree.

Don't find it uncomfortable. Maybe you weigh less than me? (15 stone).

I find the fact that the bike moves around on the road quite endearing and part of it's charm.

I just ride around the limitations.:)

Not much less... I weigh abut 190 lbs (13.5 stone, I believe).

It's not how it "moves", its the rough road surfaces in my area. **** think feels like a jackhammer. :D

Just coming up to the first service. I had two minor gripes: the seat and the harsh suspension on pot holes. Both seem to have eased off; either the bike's settling in a bit or I've just got used to it. I think it's more the former.

From my 2 weeks riding my Icon I find the seat now more comfortable and the suspension apart from really bad roads no worse than other bikes in its class.
I think the main problem with the seat is that most riders have tender asses and these need to get used to the seat and not the other way around >:D

Are you an old git like me?
No!!!

Nick I really do not find the suspension that bad, my guess is that my last bikes have been quite firm so no issue to me.

Also the front brake is not bad and the rear is ****.

Love the amount you can lean over on the scrambler, have to say more than my MV. Love it.

Pleased you got your termi and belly pan.

Stay safe Nick.

What motor did you go for in the end. MK7 R?

Haven't ordered new car yet as

1. Too busy
2. Can't make my mind up.
3. If I haven't got a replacement by the time the lease company want the 328i back, I'll use the MX5.
4. What about the M2?

Great photo Ralph,

My cousin had one of these, we used to ride from dawn to dusk, I don't remember it ever stopping for anything but fuel. Great bike.

I reckon that rear suspension would be fairly similar in action to the scrambler, the seat looks to be a better design though being a flat base and top. Looks comfortable too.

You'd really think after all this time motorcycle design would have improved.

The aftermarket suppliers will be hoping these things are a sales success

Cool how the Honda Mini and Scrambler have the same suspension.. Beefy tires! LOL :) But seriously, i find the stock set up jarring to the spine and i probably ride the Scrambler in one of the world's worst streets/roads = Manila. My fix is to put more weight forward or on my pegs. I will be adjusting the rear shock soon.

Love the M2 kind of reminds me of the E30 M3 make sure you chose the right colours.

Had the use of my sons R lovely for 2 week, it is in your face after a while he fitted a Miltek and Revo stage 3 remap 0-60 3.6 seconds fun to drive but draws to to much attention.

I'm an old git but I didn't get the bike to hark back to my youth, I got it because it ticked all the boxes for me. No it isn't perfect and the suspension is soon to be replaced by a Nitron shock - I am hoping this will settle the beast down a bit on the numerous bumpy pot holey country roads I ride it on.

For all it's shortcomings I absolutely love it still, after 1600 miles :D
